Greek Mythology tells about sailors facing all manner of doom as they sailed the Aegean sea. One myth describes the dual threat of “Scylla” and “Charybdis”. Scylla, a monstrous demon, would pluck sailors from the ship as it sailed by, while on the ship’s other side Charybdis, a powerful dark whirlpool, could suck the ship down to the ocean’s bottom. Careful navigation was required for the ship to sail between these two dangerous threats. The name of the threats may have changed, but to this day the concept of being “Between the devil and the deep blue sea”, or “Between a rock and a hard place” lives on.
