Rock and A Soft Place Studios presents SCULPTURE IV, the 4th annual all sculpture show at the Live 4 Art gallery in Pawling NY.  Three Hudson Valley artists come together to offer complementary sculptural artworks embracing structure, movement, and grace, at Pawling’s Live 4 Art Gallery during August.

Joel Brown

Joel Brown’s wood fired sculptures reflect his architectural background.  After years of building design and construction, he is drawn to the immediacy of work in clay.  Viewers see fantastic buildings in his pieces, and he enjoys their reactions.  The surfaces of Brown’s pieces are achieved by wood firings through the action of flame and ash.  He trained in firing with Roger Baumann, Kristin Muller, and Dan Greenfeld.  Their kilns, based on ancient Japanese models, are stoked by teams for several days around the clock, reaching 2300 degrees.

 Bob Madden

Bob Madden is a master stone sculptor with an international client base for his awe inspiring creations.   Bob uses traditional tools of hammer and chisel to transform stone from a cold inanimate material into an engaging shape and form with stories to tell.   The subtle nuances of shape and texture contain clues to the inspiration for the piece, but full appreciation of the work comes over time as his works undergo the process of metamorphosis in changing light and shadows.

Karen Madden’s

Multidisciplinarian Karen Madden changes gears for Sculpture IV and temporarily puts aside creating metal artworks in favor of her wool felted creations.  Wool is a renewable resource and has been used for clothing and adornment for thousands of years.  Using it as an artistic medium highlights its versatility. To add elements of texture and color, Karen adds synthetic materials, incorporating them into her designs to add elements of color and texture.  Many would consider these materials inharmonious with soft fiber, but Karen see them as a way to add depth and dimension to her creations.
